The Warpstone Conflict

Updated 1/2022

This page contains the background setting for a long-running Warhammer campaign which helps add context for the games we're playing. This is a rearview mirror campaign.

The Story...

What started out as an increase in goblin activity in the Dwarf Realms turned into full-scale hostilities with Night Goblins, Orcs, and Skaven rampaging in Bretonnia and the southern parts of the Empire. Things escalated quickly when a large chunk of warpstone crashed into the ground outside of the small Empire village of Leitzburg. And now, it looks like the goblin skirmishes were the early signs of an actual Orc Waaagh.  Merchant High Elves from Marienburg were called for assistance in Bretonnia, and a mysterious Lizardmen have even gotten involved, though no one seems to understand their motives or loyalties as they've been seen fighting on both sides of the conflict.

The Characters
Brief description of the main personalities involved in the conflict can be found here.

Here's a map with the major events labeled; the numbered timeline list below the map includes a blurb about the major battle or group of battles that occurred.

Update: We've got a new map to better represent where the "HQs" are for the main forces (or at least, the most recent forces).  The map is at this link.

1) News of goblin activity near the southern Dwarf keep of Barak Varr.  Unconfirmed reports of an uneasy alliance between the goblin boss and a Skaven force.
2) Skaven & Goblin alliance is real, as the High Elves and Dwarfs come to the assistance of Bretonnian town of Parravon and holds off the horde alliance.
3) The Night Goblin boss Skragg is leading the alliance horde and attacks the town of Parravon again, sacking the city. After hearing about the sack of his city, Duc de Parravon's army returns from campaigning in Lustria. His vanguard, unaware of that their Duc personally requested the help of the Elves, attack the High Elf host and chase them from the city.  The goblin boss Skragg thinks that the Skaven are getting more credit for the sack of Parravon and attacks the erstwhile allies as the horde alliance falls apart.  The skaven beat back the attack, then overcome the elf host that was retreating from the bretonnians.
4) The dwarfs of Barak Varr use the recent hostilities to try and settle a grudge with the High Elf Prince, but fail.
5) Months pass, and the High Elf merchant prince has reconstituted his warband, routing a passing Empire scout force.  After the scrap, the elves unexpectedly meet a small force of Lizardmen who force the elves back to their trading post in Marienburg
6) High Elf scouting force raids a suburb town of Nuln
7) Warpstone crashes outside Leitzburg. Skaven attack and capture a large chunk.  Meanwhile, Baron Edmund has returned from his summer campaign in the Border Lands and runs into the High Elf host.
8) The lizards fail in an attempt to steal the warpstone from the skaven, getting massacred in the attempt. Baron Edmund sends a force to exact revenge on the Skaven, but the Skaven defeat them.
9) The High Elf loremasters get wind of the new source of warpstone and send a group of young elf mages to retrieve as much as possible, entrusting their safety to Prince Althuan and his warhost. The large host of elves looks like an invasion of the Empire, drawing Emperor Karl Franz to the town and repels the invaders.
10) Lizardmen defeat Baron Edmund's force on the way back to Leitzburg
11) Constant warfare draws the attention of the Orcs, always looking for a good scrap. Large greenskin horde attacks the lizardmen routing them from their hidden temple.
12) Large skaven horde led by the Lord Thrott attacks Baron Ed's keep at Leitzburg, but the Baron returns and repels the Skaven force and Thrott is routed back to Bretonnia
13) Rumors abound that infamous Orc Chieftain Gorfang Rotgut gathered a large Waaagh and while he headed north into Bretonnia the greenskin horde ran into a massive Skaven force near the town of Summersall Fort. The Skaven were led by Thanquol in response to the rout of Thrott's army.
The next battle in the conflict would be Gorfang's Horde vs Thanquol's force which was undecided.

07/2020: Recently, the conflict has taken a strange turn.  The Skaven haven't been seen in ages but Gorfang Rotgut managed to put together a Waaagh that was threatening Nuln.  A series of battles took place that resulted in Baron Edmund being decapitated, his son Edwin taking over as the Baron and he perished too, but not before saving Nuln and avenging his father's death

01/2022: Another update -  Young Edwin III as found the warpstone after sacking the orc and goblin camp!
